🇬🇧 The past fifteen years have exposed the full fragility of European integration. Due to the critical phases that have recently affected the continent—on multiple fronts—the European Union has had to confront a state of precariousness. After Brexit, in particular, the teleological nature of integration appeared weakened, and the idea of a predetermined path of progress was questioned for the first time. It is therefore not surprising that there is now greater awareness of how the lack of political will to pursue cooperation in Europe could jeopardize the very existence of the EU. This compels us to ask what ultimately guarantees the Union’s unity or, conversely, what is the actual cause of its disintegration. In the canonical discourse supporting European integration, EU intergovernmentalism is largely considered the main cause of its disintegration.
